SaltyMing offers public NetBSD and pkgsrc mirror

The Singapore server provides NetBSD releases and the full pkgsrc tree over HTTPS and HTTP on a 1 Gbps connection

SaltyMing today announced a public mirror of the NetBSD release tree and the whole pkgsrc tree at mirror.saltyming.net. Anyone can download files over HTTPS and HTTP.

The mirror runs on a server in Singapore with an AMD EPYC 9645 processor (12 vCPUs), 31 GiB of memory, and a 4 TB disk, connected at 1 Gbps. The first synchronization of pkgsrc from the official server is still in progress, so some files may still change.

What is offered

NetBSD releases are served from /pub/NetBSD/, with rsync.NetBSD.org as the upstream server. NetBSD-archive is not included. The whole pkgsrc tree is served from /pub/pkgsrc/, with rsync.NetBSD.org as the upstream server.

How to connect

Open https://mirror.saltyming.net/ or http://mirror.saltyming.net/ in a web browser or a download tool. The server accepts only GET and HEAD requests. A folder address under /pub/ opens a file listing page, and adding ?json to the same address returns the listing as JSON.

The mirror’s page is available in Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Malay, Tamil, Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Thai. The theme can be set to system, light, or dark.

Synchronization and status

Both mirrors are synchronized from their upstream servers over rsync. The front page shows the status of NetBSD and pkgsrc as active, syncing, or failed, and the same information is available as JSON at /status.json, which is updated every minute. Regular synchronization runs at 02:47 and 14:47 UTC for NetBSD and at 08:47 and 20:47 UTC for pkgsrc.

Download speed check

Selecting Download in the speed test on the front page downloads a 30 MiB file from the same server while a progress bar fills. When it finishes, the page shows the file size, the elapsed time, and the average speed. If the download fails, it shows an error message and a button to try again.
